1000 Islands, NY

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

This morning we drove to Alexandria Bay, NY and took a luncheon cruise on the St. Lawrence River. This is the 1000 Islands district of the river. It is called 1000 Islands because there are 1,894 islands.

This is the smallest island that can still be classified as an island. It is called Tom's Thumb Island.

There are millionaire's rows on both the US and Canada sides. There is a castle that you can tour called Boldt's Castle. It's boat house is an island itself and is about three stories high. Talk about extravagant! The castle has 129 rooms and can house 25 families of four with their own bathroom even. We didn't tour it.

This is the generator house that houses two electric generators for the castle.

Instead of touring the castle, we drove across the bridge into Canada and then took the ferry from Kingston (in the background) to Wolfe Island.

It appears that Wolfe Island gets its power from wind.

Then we took a smaller ferry from Wolfe Island to the US. It was a smaller ferry and the water "washed" your car as you crossed. A little more scary than the first one.

That's our white Yukon XL.
